Getting Started

So you want to participate in WiGIS’s WiConnect program?  You’ve come to the right place!  Use the information below to learn how to get started and what to expect at each step of WiConnect program.

Steps to be a mentee:

1.      Sign up as a WiGIS member!

You have to be a due-paying WiGIS member to participate in WiConnect.  If you are not already a Student or Professional level member, join WiGIS here!

Please note, if you are not a due-paying member, there will be some links on this page that you will not have access to.

2.      Find your mentor!

Access the internal directory of WiGIS mentors on the WiConnect Mentor Directory.  Review the internal directory to find the WiGIS mentor that is right for you!

3.      Contact your mentor.

Contact your mentor of choice and ask if they are willing to take you on as a mentee at this time.  To contact a mentor, click on your mentor of choice’s profile in the WiConnect Mentor Directory.  At the top of their profile, click the send message button. Once you send your message, you can expect the mentor’s reply in your personal e-mail.  If you’d like help crafting an introductory e-mail, refer to this sample introductory e-mail.

4.      Communicate with your mentor

Take time to formulate and discuss your goals, expectations, and desired communication level with your mentor.  Use WiConnect’s Pre-Program Assessment as an outline of what topics you should discuss with your mentor.

5.      Fill out the entry survey

Embark on your official WiGIS mentorship by filling out the entry survey .  The entry survey has been designed to help you communicate your desired goals and expectations for the benefit of you as well as the organization.

6.      Review your guidance material

Once you fill out the entry survey, you will automatically receive a packet of guidance material  from WiGIS.  These materials are designed to help you and your mentor get the most out of your pairing.

7.      Get mentored!

Using the guidance material and goals you formulated in step 3, engage your mentor in a way that works for both of you.  Remember, it is the mentee’s responsibility to maintain communication, set up meetings, and “drive” the partnership forward.

8.      Fill out the exit survey

Six months after completing the entry survey, you will automatically receive the exit survey via an e-mail notification. Fill out the exit survey in order to obtain your official certification of completion.  Your feedback is invaluable and will help WiGIS modify its program to better meet the needs of women in the GIS industry.

Steps to be a mentor:

1.      Sign up as an official WiGIS mentor!
There are two ways to sign up as a mentor.  If you are not yet a WiGIS member, you can sign up by joining the organization  and answering filling out the questions in the WiConnect Mentor Sign Up section.

If you are already a member and would like to sign up, you can do so by visiting your My Profile page and filling out the WiConnect Mentor Sign Up questions at the bottom of your profile.  Once you are enrolled, some of your profile and contact information  will be available in the official WiConnect Program Directory.

Please note, if you are not a due-paying member, there will be some links on this page that you will not have access to.

2.      Wait to be contacted by a prospective mentee
You will be contacted by a prospective mentee via e-mail.  As a WiGIS mentor, you are required to respond to the mentee either accepting their request to be mentored at this time or politely declining.
3.      Communicate with your mentee
Refer to the Pre-Program Assessment to see what information you need to review with your mentee prior to filling out the entry survey.
Your mentee has also been asked to take time to formulate and discuss their goals for the program with you.  Take time to discuss and help her formulate her goal for the partnership as needed.
4.      Fill out the entry survey
Embark on your official WiGIS mentorship by filling out the entry survey.  The entry survey has been designed to help you communicate your desired goals and expectations for the benefit of you as well as the organization.
5.      Review your guidance material
Once you fill out the entry survey, you will automatically receive a packet of guidance material from WiGIS.  These materials are designed to help you and your mentor get the most out of your pairing.
6.      Get mentoring!
Using the guidance material and information you learned about your mentee in step 3, engage your mentee in a way that works for both of you.  Although it is the mentee’s responsibility to maintain communication, if you feel haven’t heard from her in a while, a quick e-mail or phone call can go a long way in reaffirming your commitment to being her mentor.
7.      Fill out the exit survey

Six months after completing the entry survey, you will automatically receive the exit survey via an e-mail notification. Fill out the exit survey in order to obtain your official certification of completion.  Your honest feedback will help WiGIS modify its program to better meet the needs of women in the GIS industry.
