WiConnect Participation Overview

So you want to participate in WiGIS’s WiConnect program?  You’ve come to the right place!  Use the information below to learn how to get started and what to expect at each step of WiConnect program.

Due-paying members can find all documents referenced below in the Program Resources area.

Steps to be a mentee:

1.      Sign up as a WiGIS member!

You have to be a due-paying WiGIS member to participate in WiConnect.  If you are not already a Student or Professional level member, join WiGIS here!

2.   Review the guidance materials

The guidance materials, available for members on the interal Program Resources page, provides in depth information for mentees on how to get started in WiConnect.  It also outlines responsibilities and best practices you'll want to review before starting the program.

3.      Find your mentor!

Access the internal directory of WiGIS mentors on the WiConnect Mentor Directory.  Review the internal directory to find the WiGIS mentor that is right for you!

4.      Contact your mentor.

Contact your mentor of choice and ask if they are willing to take you on as a mentee at this time.  Refer to  the WiConnect Guidance Materials for in depth information on reaching out to a WiConnect mentor.

5.      Communicate with your mentor

Take time to formulate and discuss your goals, expectations, and desired communication level with your mentor by filling out the Pre-Program Assessment, available in the Program Resources area.  As a mentee, filling out the Pre-Program Assessment is a required responsibility.

6.      Fill out the entry survey

Embark on your official WiGIS mentorship by filling out the entry survey.  The entry survey collects information WiGIS needs to register your partnership, but it is also designed to help you think through and communicate your desired goals and expectations for your partnership.

7.      Get mentored!

Using the guidance material and goals you formulated in the Pre-Program Assessment, engage your mentor in a way that works for both of you.  Remember, it is the mentee’s responsibility to maintain communication, set up meetings, and “drive” the partnership forward.

8.      Fill out the exit survey

Six months after completing the entry survey and/or once you accomplish the goal of your partnership, it is your responsibility to fill out the exit survey for your certificate of completion which is necessary to obtain GISP points for your participation.  Your feedback in the exit survey will help WiGIS modify its program to better meet the needs of women in the GIS industry.

Steps to be a mentor:

1.      Sign up as an official WiGIS mentor!
There are two ways to sign up as a mentor.  If you are not yet a WiGIS member, you can sign up by joining WiGIS and filling out the questions in the WiConnect Mentor Sign Up section.

If you are already a member and would like to sign up, you can do so by visiting your My Profile page and filling out the WiConnect Mentor Sign Up questions at the bottom of your profile.

The guidance materials, available for members on the Program Documentation page, outlines responsibilities and best practices you'll want to review before starting the program.

3.      Wait to be contacted by a prospective mentee
You will be contacted by a prospective mentee via e-mail.  As a WiGIS mentor, you are required to respond to the mentee either accepting their request to be mentored at this time or politely declining.
4.      Communicate with your mentee
Your mentee has also been asked fill out a Pre-Program Assessment form to start formulating her goals for the program with you.  Take time to provide your input on her goals and have a discussion about desired frequency and methods of communication.

7.      Fill out the exit survey

Six months after completing the entry survey and/or once your mentee accomplishes the goal of your partnership, it is your responsibility to fill out the exit survey for your certificate of completion which is necessary to obtain GISP points for your participation.  Your feedback in the exit survey will help WiGIS modify its program to better meet the needs of women in the GIS industry.
